Independent expertise

In the course of the “interzum award: intelligent material & design”, five renowned independent experts from the fields of design and architecture will evaluate and judge all submitted products. The jury’s expertise guarantees the utmost objectivity and thus ensures the competition’s high quality.

Dipl.Des. Martin Ballendat

Martin Ballendat is an internationally successful designer for 25 years.

Born in Bochum in 1958 he studied Design at the Folkwangschule in Essen. After 3 years as an employee for the company Sedus at the border to Switzerland he took over the design- and development department of the Austrian company Wiesner Hager and shaped their design for more than 10 years.

In 1995 he founded his own studio in Upper Austria and later a second one in Germany. Meanwhile Design Ballendat is a company with 16 employees and is  working for well- known brands in more than 12 countries ( Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Thailand, USA, Egypt, Poland,Turkey, France and the UK).

He achieved more than 100 design prizes and other awards, among them
18xRed Dot, 2xBest of the Best, IF-Award Hannover, Best of Neocon Chicago Gold and Silver, Good Design Award Athenaeum, Best of the Best Interieur-Innovations-Award, Focus LGA Stuttgart in Gold and Silver, Design Plus Award, Materialica Award, IIDEX Gold Award Canada, National Award Saarland, Josef Binder Award in Gold, National Award Austria; prizes in Belgium, Netherlands, Japan, China, Hungary and many more.

Martin Ballendat has worked other 10 years as lecturer and visiting professor at the Universities of applied sciences in the field of design in Graz and Salzburg.

Mårten Claesson

Architect and Designer, founder and co-owner of Claesson Koivisto Rune Architects in Stockholm

Mårten Claesson was born in 1970 in Lidingö, Sweden. After studying at the Vasa Technical College in Stockholm in the department of Construction Engineering and at the Parsons School of Design in New York in the departments of Architecture and Product Design, he graduated in 1994 with an MFA degree from Konstfack, the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He is co-founder of the world renowned Swedish architecture and design partnership “Claesson Koivisto Rune”, which is multidisciplinary in the classic Scandinavian way and pursues the practice of both architecture and design. For their work they have received, among a large array of international awards, the Red Dot in five different product categories. Mårten Claesson is also a writer and lecturer in the field of architecture and design.

Birgit Schwarzkopf

Owner of Schwarzkopf Innenarchitektur interior design agency in Düsseldorf

Birgit Schwarzkopf studied interior design at Fachhochschule Lippe (University of Applied Sciences) in Detmold. She later expanded her skills in marketing and in business administration through her postgraduate studies in industrial engineering. With this combination of specialist subjects, she worked for different employers, specialising among other things in the conservation and promotion of historical monuments. She founded the Schwarzkopf Innenarchitektur interior design agency in 1994, and in 1996 took over the office of Büschenfeld Architektur. Her agency manages architectural and interior design projects across Germany and specialises in construction measures on existing buildings, placing major emphasis on individual detail planning and realisation through high-quality tradespersons.

Interior designer Birgit Schwarzkopf managed the NRW regional association of BDIA or Bund Deutscher InnenArchitekten (Association of German Interior Architects/Designers) for 16 years and also is a speaker at various Chambers of Architects and carpentry associations.

Dick Spierenburg

Designer, Spierenburg studio, Bilthoven, The Netherlands

Dick Spierenburg, born in 1953, studied Architecture at Delft University of Technology and Interior & Product Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In 1978, he joined the Dutch manufacturer Castelijn who produced a great number of his furniture designs. Spierenburg remained with the company for fifteen years, in his last function he served as its Managing Director. Since 1995, he has initiated and realised various leading permanent interior design exhibitions. Besides his architectural designs of offices, factories and private houses, Dick Spierenburg has worked as Creative Consultant for imm cologne, from 2011 as Creative Director. In 2001, he started KBDS with the Dutch designer Karel Boonzaaij. Until 2009, they designed for numerous brands, such as Arco, Hollands Licht and Minotti Italia, to name but a few. In 2009 Spierenburg founded his own studio.

Prof. Dr. Peter Zec

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, born in 1956, studied media science, psychology and the theory and history of art. From 1986 to 1988 as head of the “Image” division, he played a major role in planning the ZKM [“Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie”: Center for Art and Media] in Karlsruhe, Germany. He was managing director of the BDG [“Bund Deutscher Graphik-Designer”: Federation of German Graphic Designers] and the VDID [“Verband Deutscher Industrie-Designer”: Association of German Industrial Designers]. Since 1991, he has been the president of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen e.V. In 1993, Zec accepted a Professorship for Business Communication Management at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (University of Applied Sciences) in Berlin, Germany. Zec has been the president of Red Dot GmbH & Co. KG since May 2001 and founded the Red Dot Institute for Advanced Design Studies in 2009. Zec was President of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) from 2005 to 2007. From 2006 to 2007 he was the Chairman of the IDA (International Design Alliance). As a former Icsid President, he is now an Icsid Senator and consulted on all important issues concerning the association.
